'Drunk Driving Hunter' Indicted Without Detention

A YouTuber, suspected of drunk driving, has been indicted after chasing a driver in his 30s, resulting in the driver's death.

On the 28th, the 1st Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Heo Sung-hwan) announced that a 42-year-old YouTuber, referred to as A, has been indicted without detention on charges of joint intimidation under the Act on the Punishment of Violent Crimes.

A is accused of chasing after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a 30-something driver, referred to as B, on the roads in the Sanwol-dong area of Gwangju at approximately 3:50 AM on September 22 of last year, under the suspicion of drunk driving. This pursuit allegedly led to B's vehicle crashing into a parked truck on the shoulder.

B, who was severely injured in the accident, was transported to a nearby hospital but died three hours after the incident.

Eleven subscribers who participated in the chase alongside A have also been indicted. The prosecution believes that a causal relationship exists between their actions and B's fatal accident.

A prosecution official stated, "We will respond sternly to crimes that pose a risk to the general public under the pretext of private punishment."

Meanwhile, A, who has been active as a 'drunk driving hunter' on YouTube, has been documenting the entire process of reporting suspected drunk drivers, conducting stop-and-search operations, and making arrests in entertainment districts, sharing this content on his channel.

A's allegations also include the act of unlawfully detaining a driver, who was not under the influence, in the driver's seat of a vehicle in December 2023.
