Decision on the detention of a man in his 50s charged with the murder of five family members

The Western Yongin Police Station in Gyeonggi Province held a pre-detention interrogation on the suspect, Mr. A, in his 50s, who is accused of murdering five family members, including his parents and wife and children, at the Suwon District Court on the afternoon of the 17th.

Mr. A was transported from the Yongin Dongbu Police Station to the Suwon District Court at around 1:40 PM. He proceeded to the courtroom without answering any questions from the press.

He is accused of drugging his family members with sleeping pills at their home in an apartment in Suji District, Yongin, on the 14th, and then killing them. The victims included his parents in their 80s, his wife in her 50s, and two daughters.

After the incident, Mr. A left a note stating, "I will kill everyone and then die myself," and fled to an officetel in Gwangju Metropolitan City, but was arrested by the police on the same morning.

During the police investigation, he stated, "I was facing enormous debt and a civil lawsuit due to being sued for 'fraudulent real estate sales' during an apartment development project" and added, "I couldn't pass on the debt to my family."

However, a clear motive for the crime has not yet been established.

The police are thoroughly investigating Mr. A's business status, the scale of his assets, and his debt relationships to verify his statements. This incident marked the first time Mr. A appeared in public. The police plan to continue their investigation as soon as a detention warrant is issued.
