One in Four Americans Predict "The U.S. Will Do Nothing if North Korea Invades"
One in four Americans predicts that if North Korea invades Republic of Korea, the United States will do nothing.
On the 3rd (local time), Timothy Rich, a political science professor at Western Kentucky University and a political expert on Korea and Taiwan, revealed the results of a survey conducted through the North Korea specialized media '38 North' regarding the possible U.S. response if North Korea were to invade Republic of Korea.
The survey was conducted in February with 552 Americans and 1,000 Koreans participating.
According to the results, 24.3% of Americans expected "the U.S. will do nothing," while only 37% believed that U.S. troops would be deployed to protect Korea.

In contrast, among the Koreans surveyed, only 7.1% mentioned "U.S. inaction in the event of a North Korean invasion."
The proportion of respondents who anticipated military support from the U.S. in terms of weapons and intelligence was 62.9%, which was higher than the 49.4% of Americans who chose the same response.
Professor Rich stated, "Koreans show greater confidence that the U.S. will respond, including the possibility of using nuclear weapons if North Korea invades the South, while the belief among American respondents that the U.S. will do nothing in this scenario is more than three times higher."

He continued, "Most Koreans recognize that U.S. troops are already stationed in their country," explaining why a relatively high proportion of Koreans expect U.S. support in the event of a North Korean invasion.
Rich emphasized that "both the American and Korean public acknowledge the seriousness of a war situation, but it appears that Koreans have an excessive confidence in U.S. assistance."
Furthermore, he pointed out, "This raises concerns that Koreans may not accept the U.S.'s 'insufficient war assistance' well."
