Increase in Sales for Essential Industries After Public Recovery Consumption Coupon Distribution

Following the distribution of the public recovery consumption coupons, it has been confirmed that the sales in essential industries such as restaurants, supermarkets, and clothing & miscellaneous goods have significantly increased.

According to data released by the Ministry of Interior and Safety on the 7th, sales in related industries showed an upward trend compared to the same period last year after the issuance of the consumption coupons.

The Ministry of Interior and Safety analyzed the credit and debit card consumption coupon use data provided by nine credit card companies (KB Kookmin, Woori, NH Nonghyup, Lotte, BC, Samsung, Shinhan, Hana, and Hyundai) from the 21st of last month to the 3rd of this month.

During this period, out of the 57.679 trillion won worth of consumption coupons issued on credit and debit cards, 26.518 trillion won (46%) were actually used.

Consumption coupon usage status and sales increase by industry

Looking at the status of consumption coupon usage by industry, public restaurants accounted for the highest proportion at 10.989 trillion won (41.4%).

This was followed by supermarkets and groceries at 4.077 trillion won (15.4%), convenience stores at 2.579 trillion won (9.7%), hospitals and pharmacies at 2.148 trillion won (8.1%), clothing and miscellaneous goods at 1.060 trillion won (4.0%), academies at 1.006 trillion won (3.8%), and leisure and recreation at 760 billion won (2.9%).

During the fourth week of July (21-27), when the consumption coupons were first distributed, total sales at affiliate stores increased by 19.5% compared to the third week (14-20), and it was up 5.5% compared to the same period last year.

Sales from the fifth week of July (28-3 of last month) saw an increase of 8.4% compared to the week before the coupon distribution began, and a 6.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

Examining the increase in sales from the third week to the fourth week of last month by industry, restaurants saw the largest growth at 2.677 trillion won, followed by fuel at 1.326 trillion won, clothing and miscellaneous goods at 1.042 trillion won, and supermarkets and groceries at 884 billion won.

In terms of sales growth rate, academies (33.3%), clothing and miscellaneous goods (19.7%), convenience stores (13.1%), and fuel (13.1%) showed the highest increases.

Notable Growth in Essential Industries Compared to Last Year

In particular, when comparing to the same period last year, sales increases were prominent in essential industries closely related to daily life, such as clothing and miscellaneous goods (14.7%), hospitals and pharmacies (8.1%), and convenience stores (5.3%).

From the third week to the fifth week of last month, the sales increase rates by industry showed clothing and miscellaneous goods (22.9%), academies (22.8%), leisure and recreation (19.9%), restaurants (16.8%), and supermarkets and groceries (16.5%) in the lead. Compared to the same period last year, clothing and miscellaneous goods (16.7%), hospitals and pharmacies (8.5%), and academies (8.3%) recorded high growth rates.

Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung stated, "The public recovery consumption coupons have clearly shown effects in increasing sales for small business owners and improving consumer sentiment among the public," and added, "We will continue to implement measures to facilitate swift consumption and stimulate additional consumption so that the recovery of the economy can persist and improve the livelihoods of the public."
