These Days, Prisons are Doing ‘Group Buys’… A YouTuber Who Served Time Reveals ‘Prison Life’ (Video)

"Does Yoon Suk-yeol, with assets exceeding 7 billion won, still need money?"… A YouTuber serving a prison sentence explains how to use the money allowed in prison.

Recently, as a fundraising campaign for former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has been re-arrested, gained traction primarily among conservative supporters, curiosity about spending methods in prison has intensified.

The money allowed in prison refers to funds sent from outside that inmates can use for purchasing daily necessities, with a maximum daily expenditure of up to 20,000 won.

According to the Ministry of Justice's guidelines for managing money and personal property, deposits can be accepted regardless of the amount, but each inmate can receive up to 4 million won. If this limit is exceeded, a personal bank account must be opened to manage the funds until the inmate's release.

As issues regarding this money allowed in prison have surged recently, some netizens have shared questions such as, "Is there a store in the prison?", "Do we have to Dutch pay for things like toilet paper?", and "Can you not buy anything without this money?"

Amidst this, a YouTuber sharing their prison experience has garnered attention for a video explaining how to manage finances inside prison.

In May, the YouTube channel "Snack Type TV" released a video titled "If you put in this much allowance, you won't be bullied."

The YouTuber stated, "At first, most people end up in a single-occupancy room. When you enter a communal living room with other people, there are communal items for use," citing examples such as shampoo, soap, toilet paper, and dishwashing detergent.

They continued, "Meals are provided, but for things like seaweed, ramen, and various seasonings that are shared, those with allowance in that room have to collectively purchase them."

"You spend a minimum of OO won on communal purchase costs every month."

In essence, a type of communal purchasing takes place in prison similar to how roommates buy daily necessities together. At a designated time, they submit codes marked on an OMR card.

According to the "[Jinju Correctional Facility] 2025 Personal Purchase Item Code and Price List (Food Items)" released by the Ministry of Justice's Correctional Headquarters in January, various food items, from condiments like soy sauce and sesame oil to fruits such as apples, tangerines, cherry tomatoes, and oranges, along with different types of coffee and snacks, have been classified as personal purchase items.

The YouTuber remarked, "The more people in the room without personal allowance, the greater the burden," adding that "as the number of people living together increases, expenditures also rise."

They also claimed that upon first entering the facility, the poor quality of the basic items provided necessitates an additional purchase of living clothes worth about 200,000 won.

Furthermore, they stated, "The most significant expense is postage. Buying registered mail about twice a month costs around 90,000 won for 20 prepaid envelopes."

As a result, the YouTuber emphasized that a minimum of 300,000 won in allowance is needed monthly, highlighting that older inmates generally need more allowance to have a comfortable life.

Meanwhile, in a so-called "Prison Watch" cafe where inmates' families gather, numerous inquiries about the appropriate amount of allowance are noted.

On the 15th, when a related question was posted, members of the cafe responded with advice such as, "No matter how frugal you are, you need at least 300,000 won," "If you frequently exchange letters, you can't ignore the cost of postage," and "I deposited 500,000 won during my first visit."
