Director Yeon Sang-ho has hinted at the return of the 'Yeoniverse'. Yeon has consistently captured the dark underbelly of society in his early animated works, leaving a strong impression with titles like 'The King of Pigs' and 'Pseudoscientist'.
The film 'Face' returns to the origins of the 'Yeoniverse'. It tells the story of 'Im Young-kyu', a master of traditional carving who is visually impaired, and his son 'Im Dong-hwan'. Dong-hwan uncovers the mystery surrounding his mother's death, which had been buried for 40 years. The original webtoon, which serves as the foundation of the film, was conceived shortly after Yeon's early work 'Pseudoscientist'.
It had already found its place within his universe even before 'Train to Busan'. The story contains intense events and a weighty, clear sense of thematic consciousness. Yeon had dreamed of adapting the webtoon into a film since he began writing 'Face'.

'Face' travels between the 1970s, a period of rapid economic growth, and present-day. It revolves around a traditional carving master with a congenital visual impairment and his wife, who disappeared one day only to return as skeletal remains after 40 years. It follows the son's journey as he begins to trace his mother's face and the circumstances surrounding her death, which he has never seen. Yeon plans to pose intense questions to the audience as he shares the film.
Prior to its release, it was officially invited to the Toronto International Film Festival. The festival organizers noted, "It is a work that stands out for its intense energy and moral complexity that permeates his body of work." 'Face' is set to hit theaters this September.
