“Love and passion for music have grown… we will continue to move forward” (NewJeans)
NewJeans has been recognized as one of the most influential female artists in the music industry.
NewJeans attended the ‘2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards’ held at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, USA, on the 6th (local time).
This year’s awards ceremony featured participation from pop stars including Karol G, Charli XCX, Ice Spice, Maren Morris, Tems, and Victoria Monét, in addition to NewJeans.
NewJeans received the ‘Group of the Year’ award, marking the first time a K-pop artist has won this award. This is the first time since the American girl group Fifth Harmony in 2015 that a winner has been selected in this category, making it 9 years since the last award was given.
American country singer Lainey Wilson, who presented the award, introduced NewJeans, stating, “They have led the new wave of girl groups in K-pop, a genre that has long been dominated by male artists.”
NewJeans expressed their disbelief at participating in such an event filled with amazing artists, saying, “Every artist here has inspired us, and thanks to them, our love and passion for music have grown. We are grateful.”
Reflecting on the two years since their debut, they said, “We’ve been incredibly blessed. We’ve experienced many new and exciting things. It’s been the best year.”
NewJeans concluded by acknowledging their fandom ‘Bunnies’ and everyone who has supported them, “All of this would have been impossible without the help of Bunnies and everyone else. We will do our best to keep moving forward. We want to share our love for music with you.”
At the event, NewJeans performed ‘Super Shy’ and ‘ETA’, highlighting their high-teen charm with school-look styling. Their energetic performance heated up the atmosphere, eliciting sing-alongs and cheers for each song.
Since last year, NewJeans has been making a notable impact in the US music market by utilizing sounds not typically associated with K-pop, such as Jersey Club and UK Garage.
In particular, they captivated music fans worldwide with their easy-listening tracks, showing a steep rise in global radio and streaming sectors. This success translated into impressive performances on various global charts, including entering five songs into Billboard’s ‘Hot 100’.
Last month, Billboard featured NewJeans on the cover of their magazine, stating, “There was an industry notion that only boy bands could build a core fandom and achieve success, but NewJeans is changing the paradigm for the success of female groups.”
Meanwhile, the ‘Billboard Women in Music Awards’ is an annual event that recognizes women artists, creators, producers, and executives who have made significant impacts in the music industry throughout the year. It was initiated in 2007.
