The Gangwon Gangneung Police announced that they placed A, a 60-year-old suspect, under investigation on the 27th of last month for attempting to extort a large sum of money from a voice phishing victim.

A is accused of receiving a check worth 127 million won from B, impersonating officials from the Financial Supervisory Service and an inspector, in downtown Gangneung on the 18th of last month.

Upon receiving the report, the police immediately halted the payment of the check and analyzed nearby CCTV footage, identifying A as a prime suspect.

The police then tracked A, learning that he had fled to Seoul by train, and discovered the torn check in a trash bin at his residence.

Confirming that the torn check was the one handed over by B, the police issued a summons to A, who appeared at the Gangneung Police Station on the 24th of last month and admitted to his charges.

Investigations revealed that A had torn the check on the orders of a voice phishing organization member upon learning that the check had been stopped.

The police stated that had they not secured the torn check, B's losses might have worsened despite the swift arrest, as checks can only be reissued after 10 years unless they are lost or stolen.

Currently, the police are intensively investigating A's additional offenses.
