Shocking Criminal Methods and Trial Process

Oh Jong-geun's crimes began in August 2007. Being a fisherman, he lured two male and female college students who asked for a boat ride in Boseong, Jeollanam-do, to the sea and murdered them.

About 20 days later, he again took two women in their twenties out on his boat and killed them.

Investigations revealed that Oh Jong-geun committed these crimes with the intent to sexually assault the women, using the isolated environment of the open sea to carry out brutal murders.

During the appeals process in February 2010, Oh Jong-geun, through his lawyer, requested a constitutional review regarding the death penalty, suggesting that an alternative punishment between the death penalty and life imprisonment should be established.

The Gwangju High Court accepted this request, and the Constitutional Court reviewed the constitutionality of the death penalty. However, the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of maintaining the death penalty with a vote of 5 (constitutional) to 4 (unconstitutional).

In June 2010, the Supreme Court finalized Oh Jong-geun's death sentence, making him the oldest death row inmate in South Korea at the age of 72.
