Elementary School Sports Day Starting with Apologies
On a hot sunny day, the students sprinted across the playground, kicking up sand, with purple stamps on their hands and sweating as they enjoyed chocolate-flavored popsicles in the shade of the commander's stand. Memories mingled with the scent of dirt linger long in one’s mind.
In celebration of May, the month of family, elementary schools across the nation are holding sports days to gift today's growing children with such memories and experiences.
However, recently, students at an elementary school in the Republic of Korea had to turn towards an apartment complex and apologize before the sports day began.

According to a video that went viral on Instagram, the children did not fill even a third of the elementary school playground.
Unlike in the past when all students crowded the field, only the first and second graders participated in this day's sports day.
Parents and grandparents who came to cheer on the children were also sparse, making the empty playground feel even lonelier.
Gathered on one side of the playground, the children, following the host’s lead, said, “We are sorry. We are sorry. We will only play a little today. Thank you,” seeking understanding from the residents.

The host also encouraged the children to say their apologies louder.
A netizen who shared this moment remarked, “Let them have their sports day. I heard that there are complaints about elementary school sports days,” adding, “It's quite bitter that a sports day starts with the children turning towards the apartment complex and saying, ‘We are sorry.’”
Furthermore, they explained, “Without playing a single song and not raising the microphone volume, the sports day continued for about 2 hours and 40 minutes starting at 9 AM.”

They also noted, “With around 100 kids, it wasn’t that noisy,” adding that “the sound of greeting in this video was the loudest.”
In conclusion, they said, “These days, raising children feels like being a sinner; parents are trying hard to raise them to have the most upright and healthy thoughts, so it would be nice if everyone could be a little more lenient.”
Upon seeing the video, netizens voiced their opinions with comments such as, “The country is going crazy. Don’t we all have at least one memory of sports day?” and “What foolish adults we are,” or “There was even a notice at the apartments regarding cooperation for the sports day. When did we become so harsh about kids’ noises?”
