Unmarried Mother Outing After Drinking, 2-Month-Old Baby Eventually Dies

A tragedy occurred when a 20-year-old unmarried mother left her 2-month-old baby alone at home while she went out.

On the 1st, the Southern Gyeonggi Police Agency’s Women and Youth Division placed criminal charges against the unmarried mother, referred to as A, for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.

A is suspected of leaving her 2-month-old daughter alone at home, neglecting the child.

The incident occurred between the night of the 29th and the early morning of the next day at her residence in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. A went out for drinks with her younger sister and left the house for about 5 to 6 hours.

Upon returning home, A discovered that the baby was not breathing and immediately called 119.

The dispatched emergency crew transported the baby, who was in cardiac arrest, to the hospital; unfortunately, baby B was pronounced dead around 2:18 AM on the 31st.

According to the police investigation, there were no signs of physical abuse on baby B’s body, and A does not have any prior convictions for child-related crimes or a history of abuse.

A police official stated, “We will clarify the applicable laws to A through a detailed investigation of the circumstances.”

The police plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death for baby B.

Meanwhile, A’s younger sister, who accompanied her during the outing, has not been charged as no wrongdoing has been established.
