A 29-Year-Old Man Who Assaulted Police Officers While Drunk Sentenced to a Fine of 5 Million Won
A 29-year-old man, intoxicated and visiting a police station over a taxi fare dispute, was sentenced to pay a fine after assaulting police officers.
On the 25th, Judge Song Jong-hwan of the Chuncheon District Court's Criminal Division 1 announced that a fine of 5 million won was imposed on Mr. A (29), who faced charges of obstructing official duties.
Mr. A was prosecuted for allegedly assaulting police officers while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the indictment submitted by the prosecution, Mr. A, on February 16 at 6:20 a.m. in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, got into a dispute with a taxi driver over the fare and subsequently arrived at the Chuncheon Police Station's Western District Office.

At that time, the police officers advised Mr. A to pay the taxi fare and go home, but he ignored this and repeatedly made threatening remarks, saying, "Shall I start with you?"
Furthermore, Mr. A physically assaulted the police officers by grabbing one officer's shoulder tightly and shaking it, and he attempted to grab the collar of another officer's vest.
Judge Song Jong-hwan pointed out in the judgment that "obstructing official duties undermines the legitimate exercise of public authority and hinders the function of the national legal order, thus necessitating severe punishment," and noted that the injured police officers had not been forgiven.
However, the court explained the reasons for the sentencing stating, "Considering that the defendant appeared to have acted impulsively while intoxicated, acknowledged his wrongdoing, showed remorse, had no prior similar offenses, and has no criminal record exceeding the fine."
