Seyonggu Office Workers Who Illegally Claimed Overtime Pay

Seongdong District Office Employees Caught for Fraudulent Overtime Records

It has been revealed that two civil servants of the 6th and 7th grades at the Seongdong District Office in Seoul fraudulently recorded overtime hours to falsely receive salary payments.

On the 20th, KBS reported that the Ministry of the Interior and Safety demanded severe disciplinary action against these civil servants in March and ordered a recovery of 12 million won.

According to the report, the civil servants in question falsely recorded 86 hours and 98 hours of overtime, respectively, last year. Through these fraudulent activities, the 6th-grade civil servant unlawfully received approximately 1.1 million won, while the 7th-grade civil servant received about 1.06 million won.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety collaborated with the Seongdong District Office to compare work logs and access records, conducting thorough fact-finding interviews. During the investigation, the two civil servants reportedly cited personal circumstances such as child-rearing and caring for elderly parents.

Strict Response from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety Regarding Fraudulent Payments

Since the amount of overpayment exceeded 1 million won, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety demanded the Seongdong District Office to impose severe disciplinary actions such as dismissal, demotion, or suspension. Furthermore, in addition to the overpayment amounts, they instructed the recovery of a total of 12 million won, including related allowances and bonuses.

In response, it has been confirmed that the Seongdong District Office has suspended the civil servants in accordance with the Ministry’s demands.

As overtime pay for civil servants is provided from public funds, receiving it fraudulently is a serious issue that contravenes the ethics expected of public officials.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has made it clear that it will continue to respond strictly to fraudulent overtime claims and allowance misappropriation that undermine public trust in civil servants.

There will likely be continuous monitoring and institutional improvements aimed at strengthening public service ethics and integrity.
