Seoul City installs ‘this’ to clearly mark the lanes disappearing on rainy roads.

Seoul City Enhances Traffic Safety with Solar-Powered LED Road Markers

Seoul City has introduced advanced technology to ensure safe driving for motorists.

On the 12th, Seoul City announced that it is expanding the installation of solar-powered LED road markers, which have their own illumination function, on major arterial road lanes to help drivers clearly recognize lanes even on rainy days or at night.

Solar-powered LED road markers are road safety facilities that are charged by sunlight during the day and automatically light up at night or during rainy weather, illuminating the lanes. These facilities have excellent visibility due to the distinct brightness of LED lights and can penetrate water, allowing drivers to clearly identify lanes even when it is raining.

Seoul City plans to install approximately 85,000 solar-powered LED road markers on about 160 km of major arterial road lanes this year.

So far, around 45,000 have been installed on roads such as Olympic-daero and Seongsan-ro, and the city plans to analyze effectiveness before further expanding installation areas.

Selection of Installation Areas and Environmental Advantages

Seoul City has prioritized installation areas on major arterial roads where it is necessary to clearly guide drivers' attention on rainy days, including central lines, driving lanes, bus lanes, bicycle lanes, and crosswalks. Installation has been prioritized at large intersections with six or more lanes due to high traffic.

These solar-powered LED road markers also offer significant environmental advantages.

By utilizing solar energy, there is no need for additional wiring or power supply, contributing to energy savings, and the efficiency of maintenance after installation is high, as explained by Seoul City.

Han Byeong-yong, Head of the Disaster Safety Division of Seoul City, stated, "We expect to significantly improve lane visibility through solar-powered LED road markers, preventing traffic accidents. We will continue to expand the lane visibility improvement project to ensure safe driving at night and on wet roads."
