According to information released by Gyeongnam Province and Sancheong County on the 29th, plans are underway to secure an alternative site and relocate residents from Sangneung Village, which has become uninhabitable due to the landslide.

Sangneung Village suffered severe damage as the entire village was buried in soil following the landslide that occurred on the 19th. As a result, it has been determined that recovery of the village is virtually impossible, leading to the push for relocation measures.

Severe Damage

Currently, there are 16 residents living in 13 households in this village, and 26 buildings have sustained significant damage, either being destroyed or buried by soil from the landslide. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported during this incident.

Discussion on Relocation Sites Underway

Sancheong County plans to hold discussions with the residents of Sangneung Village about potential relocation sites in the future.

Cases of entire villages being relocated due to natural disasters caused by heavy rainfall are rare, and it will be important to fully gather the opinions of the residents in the process of establishing a new home. This decision to evacuate is an unavoidable choice for the recovery of the disaster-stricken area and the safety of the residents and is expected to serve as a reference for similar natural disasters in the future.
