President Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law for the first time in 45 years, leaving celebrities and industry insiders in shock. Actor Kim Ki-cheon posted a news screenshot announcing President Yoon’s declaration of martial law on SNS on the 3rd, stating, “It will go down in history. Do not collaborate.”
Writer and broadcaster Heo Ji-woong also indirectly expressed his anger toward the situation, writing “I can’t stand it anymore” on a black background image. Musical actor Kim Ji-woo criticized, saying, “I can’t believe I’m experiencing martial law firsthand, and seeing martial law troops blocking the National Assembly. What is this?”
He added, “I’m not blaming the military personnel. What sin do the soldiers on the ground have? It’s unfortunate because we are all citizens of Korea.” Singer Lee Sang-min reassured overseas fans, saying, “The people of Korea will end this situation in the right direction,” and “Korea is safe.”
Actor Lee Kwan-hoon, a former special forces member, headed to the National Assembly, telling the martial law troops, “I’m a senior from the 707 Special Mission Group. I know you’re here under orders, but you need to calm down.” He advised, “I talked to a colleague. I heard they’re coming over by helicopter. No matter who ordered it, don’t get too physical.”
In the afternoon, President Yoon addressed the nation urgently, declaring martial law. He asserted, “We will rebuild and protect the free Republic of Korea.” Subsequently, a martial law command was established. Army Chief of Staff Park An-su was appointed as the martial law commander. Chief Park announced a martial law proclamation at 11 PM.
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik encouraged participation in the plenary session on the same day. Of the 300 assembly members, 190 participated in the vote, passing it unanimously.
Eventually, President Yoon lifted the martial law declaration at about 4:27 AM. Three minutes later, at 4:30 AM, the government held a cabinet meeting and approved the annulment plan.
