Rapper Nafla (real name Choi Seok-bae, 32) has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.
The first division of the Supreme Court held a final appeal hearing on September 12th for Nafla, who was indicted on charges including violations of the Military Service Act and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means.
The original verdict was upheld. The appeals by both the prosecution and Nafla were dismissed. The sentence from the second trial, which was one year and two months in prison suspended for two years, was maintained.
Nafla was indicted in February 2021 for attempting to be discharged early from his mandatory service. While serving as a social service agent at the Seocho District Office, he obtained a false medical certificate.
He deceived doctors by claiming his depression had worsened. He conspired with a military service broker to get prescribed medication but did not take it. It is reported that he stored the medication at home.
Several public officials were also implicated in the military service corruption case. Public servants from the Seocho District Office and personnel officers from the Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration were arrested for assisting Nafla.
In the first trial, Nafla was sentenced to one year in prison. However, the sentence was reduced in the second trial. The reasons for the decision included his confession, reflection, and the need for consistency with settled rulings.
This decision also considered Nafla’s prior sentence for a violation of the Narcotics Control Act (cannabis), where he was given ten months in prison suspended for two years. The judge used discretion to reduce the sentence.
Meanwhile, Nafla was released on bail last February. He underwent the trial without being detained.
