**Subway Arson Right Before Incident: Pregnant Woman Falls and Ignites Fire**
On Saturday morning, the 31st of last month, a man in his 60s committed an arson incident on Seoul's Subway Line 5, threatening the safety of citizens. It has come to light that among the victims was a pregnant woman, shocking many.
On the 25th, the 3rd Criminal Division of the Southern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Son Sang-hee) announced the arrest and indictment of Mr. Won (67), who set fire to a train bound for Mapo Station from Yeoinaru Station, on charges of attempted murder, arson causing bodily injury, and violations of the Railroad Safety Act.
At that time, Mr. Won began pouring 3.6 liters of gasoline in the fourth car of the train. According to video footage of the incident, as gasoline was sprayed on the floor, passengers began to panic and flee.
**Ignoring the Pregnant Woman Who Fell While Running Away**
A woman seated in the priority seating for pregnant women hurriedly got up. However, during the process, she slipped and fell on the gasoline.

This pregnant woman ultimately escaped the scene as the last person among those fleeing in the same direction, her shoe having come off in the process. Meanwhile, Mr. Won nonchalantly lit a lighter.
The prosecution determined that despite witnessing the pregnant woman fall, Mr. Won ignited the fire without hesitation, indicating that he had the intent to kill multiple passengers, not just commit simple arson.
His actions shocked many as he did not stop his plan even in a situation where the most vulnerable lives were at risk.
**Prosecutors Apply Attempted Murder Charges… 160 Counts**
The prosecution also noted that the arson took place in a submerged tunnel approximately 1.6 km long underneath the Han River. Due to the limited escape routes, ventilation and fire suppression would have been difficult in the tunnel structure, which could have led to a major disaster if the fire spread. In a fire reproduction experiment conducted by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, scenes of fire and toxic gases rapidly spreading inside the subway were reproduced when the fire ignited.

According to the investigation, Mr. Won decided to commit arson after losing a divorce lawsuit. He purchased gasoline on the 21st of last month and prepared a torch lighter, transferring all his assets to relatives after cashing in his deposits, terminating insurance policies, and redeeming funds. The day before the crime, he was captured on CCTV carrying a bag containing gasoline, scouting for potential crime scenes on Seoul's Subway Lines 1, 2, and 4.
The prosecution views his actions as not a spontaneous emotional outburst, but clearly a planned attempt at murder.
