“Playing Movies in Class and Ignoring Kids, Clenching Fists and Swearing”… Controversy Over Elementary Teacher ‘Child Abuse’

Controversy Over Elementary School Teacher's Neglect of Classes and Student Abuse

Claims have been raised that an elementary school teacher has habitually neglected classes and abused students, sparking social controversy.

According to the police on the 31st of last month, the Seosan Education Support Office has recently reported teacher B (in her 30s), who is a homeroom teacher at A Elementary School, to the police on charges of child abuse.

According to the education support office, parents of A Elementary School claimed that teacher B neglected the students and failed to conduct normal classes from the first day of the semester to the end of the school year, which began in March.

Parents stated that despite dozens of complaints filed and demands for corrective action from the principal, B did not improve her behavior. Instead, she exhibited inappropriate behavior by yelling at and getting angry with students who brought these issues to light.

They further pointed out that classes that should normally last 40 minutes were only conducted for about 10 to 25 minutes, and that the 5th and 6th periods were almost daily replaced with watching movies or dramas or lectures from outside instructors.

Even more concerning is that there was no homework or learning assessments assigned, and the classroom environment was poorly managed, with garbage piling up and flies buzzing around, while the teacher failed to clean or instruct students to clean.

B was also reported to have properly managed moveable classes, meal times, and the guidance of students, and had neglected to oversee students who were absent or missed class.

Moreover, he did not intervene when students played games on their smartphones during class or kicked a ball in the classroom, and was said to frequently use profanity and vulgar language during conversations with students.

Some parents claimed that B made repeated physical gestures of hitting the students while yelling.

Parent C expressed, "At the beginning of the semester, I thought it was an adjustment period, but as time went on, classes were not conducted normally. Despite having several meetings with the principal, the situation had not improved by the end of the semester."

Additionally, they stated, "Due to the repeated inappropriate remarks, neglect of teaching, and lack of guidance from the homeroom teacher, both my child and all the students in the class are experiencing severe emotional anxiety and infringement on their right to learn."

In response, the principal of A School stated, "I have pointed out the issues to teacher B multiple times and requested attention, but she did not listen. I consider her a unique teacher," adding, "I have no further comments as the education support office is currently investigating."

A representative from the education support office explained, "We determined the problem was serious, so we reported both the children and the homeroom teacher and conducted an investigation. The rest will be revealed in the police investigation."

Regarding the controversy, teacher B stated, "I plan to file an objection with the education support office," arguing that she is the one whose teaching rights have been infringed upon.

B further mentioned the incident involving a teacher at Seo-i Elementary School, stating, "Nothing has changed. The school situation is very serious."
