Park Chan-wook's new film will open this year's Busan International Film Festival.
The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) office announced on the 4th that the film "Can't Help It" (directed by Park Chan-wook) has been selected as the opening film for the 30th BIFF.
"Can't Help It" is a crime thriller genre. The story follows office worker Mansoo (played by Lee Byung-hun), who engages in a war for re-employment after suddenly being fired for some unspecified reason.
The film festival officials described "Can't Help It" as "a work suitable for the opening ceremony of a commemorative year" and stated, "It is the film that the audience most wants to see."
They added, "By selecting a masterpiece from a master who has led Korean cinema as the opening film, we send a message of respect and support for Korean cinema."
Jeong Han-seok, the BIFF executive committee chairman, expressed, "I am thrilled and excited to be able to see the story that Director Park Chan-wook wanted to tell the most on the first day of the film festival."
He also hoped for the revival of Korean cinema, saying, "I hope this will be a positive space that leads to interest in the work and interest in Korean cinema."
In addition to being selected as the opening film for BIFF, this work has also been officially invited to the competition sections of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.
The unique mise-en-scène, solid direction, and outstanding performances from "trustworthy actors" further raise expectations. The film features Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, and Yom Hye-ran.
Meanwhile, "Can't Help It" can be seen at the 30th BIFF, which will take place from October 17 to 26 next month.
