Netflix has revealed the production story of 'Squid Game Season 2' (directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk).
'Squid Game: Season 2 Production Story' was updated on Netflix on the 3rd. The video runs for about 27 minutes and includes production behind-the-scenes.
This is the first time the production story of Korean content is featured on Netflix with 'Squid Game Season 2'. Previously, production stories for 'Stranger Things' and 'Money Heist' were released.
The video features director Hwang Dong-hyuk, art director Chae Kyung-sun, actors Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, and Wi Ha-joon, discussing the massive hit of Season 1.
Director Hwang introduced, "The process of Gi-hun keeping his words from the end of Season 1, struggling to reveal who organized the games."
There was information about the story development, new and returning characters, existing and new games. The reason for starting Episode 1 with the 'ddakji man' was explained in detail.
The unique designs of the game sets also caught the eye. It showcased sets such as 'Red Light, Green Light,' 'Five-to-Six Modern Pentathlon,' and the 'Coupling Game'.
Lee Byung-hun marveled, "Honestly, every time we went to the shooting location for a game, everyone was speechless," adding, "It felt like being in a different world."
He continued, "The events that happen there are brutal," and added, "The disparity of cruel events occurring in beautiful spaces might be the color of Squid Game."
The newly changed rules were also mentioned. Lee Jung-jae evaluated, "The setting of being able to vote between the games was brilliant."
Director Hwang explained, "We actively utilized the voting system. The game organizers used it much more cleverly," and narrated, "It causes intense confrontation as sides are split."
It symbolizes global conflict situations through the OX voting system. He said, "I wanted to symbolically express how conflicts arise."
Lastly, director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed, "Through the people inside the game arena, I wanted to show it as if it's someone else's story, asking 'Aren't we like this?'"
Meanwhile, 'Squid Game Season 2' is a sequel to 'Squid Game'. It depicts the intense confrontation between Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) and the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) who re-enter the game.
