Netflix movie "The War" (directed by Kim Sang-man) has been selected as the opening film for the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

The BIFF organizing committee held official press conferences in Seoul and Busan on the 3rd. They announced the opening and closing films, as well as the lineup for the 29th BIFF.

"The War" is a historical epic. It tells the story of Jong-ryeo (played by Park Jung-min), the son of a Joseon warrior family, and Cheon-young (played by Kang Dong-won), a servant, who meet as enemies during the Japanese invasions of Korea.

This is the first time an OTT film has been chosen as the BIFF opening film. Director Park Chan-wook participated in production and screenplay, garnering early attention. It will be premiered in Busan.

It is considered the most popular opening film in BIFF's history. BIFF's executive committee chairman Park Do-shin said, "It is a movie that can greatly appeal to general audiences."

The closing film is "Ajoomma" directed by Eric Khoo of Singapore. The film stands out for its themes on life and death, featuring Catherine Deneuve among others.

This year, BIFF has invited 224 films from 63 countries. Of these, 86 will have their world premieres. Including screenings in the Community BIFF section, a total of 279 films will be presented.

There is also a special program honoring actor Lee Sun-kyun. Films such as "Paju," "Our Sunhi," "A Hard Day," "Parasite," and "A Country of Happiness," as well as the drama "My Mister," will be screened.

Meanwhile, BIFF will be held from October 2 to 11. It can be attended at Busan Cinema Center, CGV Centum City, and Lotte Cinema Centum City.
