“Money Missing from Son’s Military Bank Account”… A Mother’s Plea for Help with Her Soldier Son

Military Serviceman's Account Experiences Mysterious Transfer, Parents in Shock

Recently, the mother of a soldier discovered that money had been transferred from her son's account without his knowledge, leaving her in disbelief.

On the 20th, a post expressing the mother’s concerns was shared on the automobile-focused online community 'Bobaedream,' drawing significant attention from netizens.

The mother, identified as A, stated, "I usually just read the posts but signed up to share my story." According to A, on the 17th, she received a message from her son saying, "Someone took all the money from my account. Can you send me some? I had a paycheck, but there's nothing left."

With his vacation approaching next month, her son was in dire straits as he had no money for even his travel expenses before receiving his salary.

It was puzzling that money was missing from the account, especially since her son had never sent any money. Initially, A thought that perhaps her son had spent all his salary, but she was shocked when he sent her the transaction history.

On the 15th, there were records of two transfers: 300,000 won at 6:13 PM and 500,000 won at 7:43 PM.

Suspicious Transaction History and Bank's Lackluster Response

A pointed out several irregularities in the transaction history she provided.

The balance before the transfers was 807,537 won, but after transferring 300,000 won and subsequently 500,000 won, the remaining balance was still displayed as 7,537 won. Normally, after a transfer of 300,000 won, the balance should have been 507,537 won, which was not the case. Furthermore, it was baffling that an additional transfer of 500,000 won occurred with a balance of only 7,537 won.

A claimed that the recipient of the funds, an individual named Song, was someone she and her son had never heard of.

She asked her son if he had ever been a victim of voice phishing or if he had accessed any suspicious messages or online sites, but he replied that he hadn't.

"I immediately called the bank to explain the situation and requested them to freeze the account. Being far away, I felt so helpless," A explained her feelings at that time.

Due to the holiday period, banking services were unavailable, so she advised her son to visit the bank and police station on Monday. However, three days later, A received an even more shocking message from the bank.

Bank B notified her that, "The requested reimbursement for the erroneous transfer has been deemed non-returnable by the respective bank," adding that "in this case, you may file a lawsuit for the return of unjust enrichment."

A expressed her anger, saying, "I’ve never sent any money, so how can this be termed an erroneous transfer? Is it acceptable for the bank to handle it so casually? I'm so furious."

She continued, "I'm planning to go to the police station tomorrow, but I doubt it will lead to any resolution. My husband even suggested filing a lawsuit; what should we do?"

In response, community members offered various suggestions. Some advised her to file a complaint with the Financial Supervisory Service and to check if her son had ever lent his phone to someone in the military.

One member commented, "These days, many engage in gambling, cryptocurrency, or illegal drugs in the military." They explained, "An erroneous transfer is when funds are mistakenly sent; if the recipient refuses returns, it appears they have received the money legitimately."

They added, "Conducting a police investigation into the purpose of the 800,000 won transfer and the counterpart should reveal the truth."

Another member suggested, "This is more akin to a financial crime rather than just a simple transfer error. You should report it to the Financial Supervisory Service and the local cyber crime investigation unit."
