A man suddenly appeared on the railway… Train driver "I couldn't avoid it"

An incident occurred in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, where a man was struck and killed by a Mugunghwa train.

According to the police on the 29th, around 8:20 AM that day, a man in his 50s, identified as A, who has not yet been confirmed, was hit by a train on the tracks between Imgi Station and Nokdong Station in Byeobjeon-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, and died at the scene.

The train involved was Mugunghwa-ho 1680, which had departed from Donghae Station and was headed to Yeongju Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The driver reportedly stated, "A person suddenly appeared on the tracks during operation."

About 10 train passengers… No additional injuries reported

At the time of the incident, there were about 10 passengers on board the train, but fortunately, no other injuries were reported. The driver, having recognized the accident, attempted emergency braking immediately, but A was reportedly killed on the spot due to the collision with the train.

Police and firefighting authorities were dispatched to the scene to verify the identity and ascertain the exact circumstances of the accident, and A's identity is currently under investigation. They are also examining the surrounding area's closed-circuit (CC) TV footage and looking into A's approach route and intent.

Train operations delayed by 30 minutes… Resumed at 9:10 AM

As a result of this incident, train operations were halted for approximately 30 minutes on certain sections of the Yeongdong Line, causing a delay in the operation of one subsequent train. Korail announced that they completed the recovery from the accident around 9:10 AM and resumed train operations in that section.

A Korail official stated, "We quickly coordinated with relevant agencies to recover from the incident immediately," and "to prevent similar accidents, we plan to strengthen patrols and safety inspections in the jurisdictional area."
