A 50-Year-Old Man Who Caused a Traffic Accident Intentionally to Extract Insurance Money

A man in his 50s has been handed over to prosecutors for allegedly colliding with a passing vehicle intentionally in an alley to extract insurance money.

On the 19th, the Goyang Police Department in Gyeonggi Province said that they have sent the man, referred to as A, to prosecutors without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud and fraud.

According to the police, A is suspected of intentionally colliding with passing vehicles eight times over the span of a month in an alley of a villa complex in Deogyang-gu, Goyang City, and embezzling approximately 10 million won in insurance money.

While investigating incidents reported as regular traffic accidents, the police concluded that A had intentionally caused the traffic accidents.

A 50-Year-Old Man Began the Crimes Due to Financial Hardship

The apprehended A stated, "I quit my job a year ago and have been struggling financially, which led me to decide to commit these crimes."

A police official said, "Insurance fraud not only undermines the foundation of the insurance system but can also lead to social burdens such as increased insurance premiums."
