
Actress Lee Young-ae is returning to the theater stage. On the 25th, LG Art Center announced, "Lee Young-ae has been cast in the commemorative production 'Hedda Gabler,' marking the center's 25th anniversary. She will play the lead role, Hedda."
This will be Lee Young-ae's first theater appearance in about 32 years. She last took to the stage in 1993 for the opening of the free theater at the Seoul Arts Center in the play "Jjajangmyeon."
"Hedda Gabler" is based on a classic by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, focusing on a woman's longing for freedom amidst social oppression. Lee Young-ae will portray the role of Hedda, skillfully capturing a character that is beautiful, complex, and destructive.
Kim Jung-ho will take the role of Tesman, Hedda's husband. Ji Hyun-jun will perform as Judge Brack, who pressures Hedda, while Lee Seung-ju has been cast as her former lover, Lövborg.
Additionally, Baek Ji-won will play Thea, a friend who provokes Hedda's jealousy. Lee Jeong-mi will assume the role of the aunt, and Jo Eo-jin will be cast as the maid.
This particular production will use Richard Eyre's adaptation. Notably, Richard Eyre has won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Director. The production will be directed by Jeon In-cheol.
Meanwhile, the play "Hedda Gabler" is set to premiere on May 7th at the LG Signature Hall at the LG Art Center in Seoul.
