Ha Jung-woo Appointed as the First Chief of AI Future Planning under the Yoon Seok-yeol Administration

Ha Jung-woo, head of Naver Cloud, has been appointed as the first Chief of AI Future Planning under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration.

On the 15th, President Yoon appointed Ha Jung-woo, head of Naver Cloud AI Innovation Center, as the Presidential Office's first Chief of AI Future Planning. This newly established AI Chief position is set to oversee a significant role in national AI investment and infrastructure strategy worth 100 trillion won over the next five years.

National AI Investment and Infrastructure Strategy Oversight

Secretary General of the Presidential Office, Kang Hoon-sik, introduced Chief Ha as "an individual who has actively proposed and led the concept of 'Sovereign AI' emphasizing AI sovereignty."

Sovereign AI is a concept where a nation builds independent AI capabilities using its own infrastructure and data, a strategy that has recently gained attention in the global AI competition.

Expectations for the Implementation of National AI Policy and Strengthening Public-Private Cooperation

Secretary Kang stated, "Chief Ha is an AI expert who emphasizes a virtuous growth strategy of AI where the state supports businesses and businesses share their success," adding, "His field experience as head of the Naver AI Innovation Center is expected to be realized in national AI policy."

Chief Ha, a private expert who oversaw AI pioneering technology research at Naver, shares the emphasis on AI sovereignty aligned with the core agenda of Yoon's administration.

The Yoon administration has pledged to generate 100 trillion won in public and private investment with the goal of becoming a 'top three AI powerhouse,' and has also presented the 'AI for All' project as a key commitment.

Youngest Chief Secretary with Rich Experience in AI Research and Development

Born in 1977, Chief Ha is noteworthy for being the youngest among the senior advisers in the Presidential Office. He graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Computer Engineering and earned a Ph.D. from the university's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. After working for two years at Samsung SDS, he joined Naver Labs in 2015.

While serving as the head of Naver AI Lab, Chief Ha led the development of Korea's first large language model (LLM), 'HyperCLOVA,' and has been active for two years in the Digital Platform Government Committee under former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Since 2023, he has contributed as an advisor to the Financial Supervisory Service, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
