Kim Soo-hyun Prevention Law, Petition to Strengthen Punishments for Sexual Crimes Against Minors Passes National Assembly
Actor Kim Soo-hyun has denied the allegations of dating the late actress Kim Sae-ron during her minor years, while a petition known as the 'Kim Soo-hyun Prevention Law' aimed at strengthening punishments for sexual crimes against minors has made its way through the National Assembly.
This petition aims to raise the age threshold for statutory rape involving minors and to intensify the associated penalties.
On the 31st of last month, a petitioner posted on the National Assembly electronic petition website titled 'Petition Regarding the Law Proposal to Raise the Age of Statutory Rape for Minors and Strengthen Punishments, known as the 'Kim Soo-hyun Prevention Law.'
The petitioner stated, "I hope to raise the age limit for the current statutory rape charge concerning minors from 13 to 16 years to 13 to 19 years and to strengthen the penalties."
He pointed out that recent allegations about Kim Soo-hyun dating Kim Sae-ron, who was a minor at the time, cannot be punished under current laws.
In addition to raising the age limit for the statutory rape charge, the petitioner also requested that the current penalties for the crime be changed from fines for indecent acts to imprisonment of at least two years, and for rape from imprisonment of at least two years to at least five years.
As of the 7th, the petition has surpassed 50,000 signatures and is set to be submitted to the relevant committee in the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, Kim Soo-hyun's agency, Goldmedalist, stated on the 14th of last month, "Kim Soo-hyun dated Kim Sae-ron from the summer of 2019, after she became an adult, until the fall of 2020," denying the allegations. Kim Soo-hyun also reiterated at a press conference, "I did not date her during her minor years."
