After visiting the National Cemetery… "A party that has lost its function, we can no longer be together"
Kim Sang-wook, a member of the People Power Party, officially declared his departure from the party. He stated, "I will walk the path of true democratic conservatism, neither extreme right conservatism nor regressive conservatism," urging a change in the conservative political landscape.
During a press conference held after paying respects at the National Cemetery in Seoul on the morning of the 8th, Kim began by expressing his apologies to "the senior and fellow lawmakers of the People Power Party, as well as the party's supporters."

He continued, "I have earnestly wished for the People Power Party to fulfill its role as a genuine conservative party and, although it has been lonely and difficult, I have not ceased to offer my sincere advice."
"A situation of function loss and extremism… we can no longer turn a blind eye"
Kim acknowledged the reality that the People Power Party is heading towards extremism. He explained, "I have come to the painful decision to part ways with a party that has now lost its function."
To the conservative supporters, he stated, "The values that today's conservatism must uphold are democracy, the rule of law, fairness, rationality, openness, inclusiveness, and freedom," urging them to make political decisions based on these standards.
He further expressed hope that "the party would embrace new ideas and maintain the dignity of conservatism by learning from differences," emphasizing, "Do not be trapped by partisan logic; make decisions for the country based on what is right and wrong."

"I hope to discuss matters with Lee Jae-myung… I will make choices for the people"
Regarding his future actions, Kim adopted a cautious attitude. He mentioned, "I have decided to leave the party today, and after hearing more opinions, I will determine whether to rejoin a party or my political path based on what is beneficial for the people."
He added, "If given the opportunity, I would like to meet with key presidential candidates, including Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party, to share thoughts on resolving current issues and the direction of the country."
Kim's announcement to leave the party is viewed as potentially igniting a reshuffling in the political landscape, coinciding with the departure of non-mainstream and reform-minded figures within the People Power Party.
