A middle school student who collided with a police officer while riding an electric scooter without a helmet in Jeju has been sent to prosecutors.
The Jeju Western Police Station announced on the 13th that they have referred a teenager, identified as A, to prosecutors on charges of obstructing special duties resulting in injury and theft.

According to the police, A was riding an electric scooter without a helmet around 11 PM on April 9 in the vicinity of Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, when he ignored a police command to stop and fled for about 30 minutes. During this process, A collided with a police officer who was conducting an enforcement action, causing injury, and continued to flee, abandoning the scooter.

Knife Possession and Additional Crimes Revealed
During the investigation, it was confirmed that A had been in possession of a roughly 30cm-long knife at the time of the incident. The police also uncovered additional theft charges against A for stealing identification cards and other items from unmanned vehicles in January and March of this year.
A police official stated that A is not classified as a minor subject to criminal law.
The fact that A is not a minor subject to criminal law means he is over 14 years old and possesses criminal responsibility.

Electric scooters are classified as motor-driven bicycles under the Road Traffic Act, making helmet use mandatory, and driving without a license is subject to punishment. Especially with the increase in safety incidents involving electric scooters among minors, the need for relevant enforcement and safety education is being emphasized.
