Director James Gunn is leading the revival of the DC Universe. The movie "Superman" (directed by James Gunn) has secured the number one spot at the North American box office for two consecutive weeks.
"Superman" was released locally on the 12th (Korean time). According to Box Office Mojo, the film surpassed $177 million (approximately 250 billion KRW) at the North American box office as of the 18th.
In just two weeks since its release, it has exceeded a global cumulative revenue of $300 million (approximately 420 billion KRW). The U.S. "Daily Mail" forecasts, "A breakthrough of $400 million (approximately 560 billion KRW) is expected on Sunday."
Thanks to the success of "Superman," attention is also on the DC Studio's (hereafter DC) upcoming projects. DC has confirmed the production of multiple films and TV series. Some projects are currently in post-production.
James Gunn introduced the DC lineup that will follow "Superman." In a recent interview with "CBS Mornings," he stated, "The next project is 'Peacemaker Season 2.' There's also 'Supergirl,' and 'Lanterns'."
"Peacemaker Season 2" is a spinoff series from the film "The Suicide Squad" (2021), focusing on the protagonist Peacemaker (played by John Cena). It is set to be released on the 21st of next month.
The so-called 'female Superman' is also on the way. DC is preparing the movie "Supergirl," which centers around Superman's cousin. It has been interpreted to be darker than previous works.
"Lanterns" will be presented as a TV series, adapted from the DC comic "Green Lantern." The story involves Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Stewart getting caught up in a murder investigation filled with mystery.
An unconventional new project is also in the works: the movie "Clayface." Filming begins this year, with a release planned for next year. Director James Gunn teased, "'Clayface' will be completely different."
The villains from the "Batman" series will serve as the main characters. He added, "While it exists within the same universe, it will be a complete horror film, which is one of the freshness that DC aims for."
He also mentioned the world that DC will build in the future. James Gunn's first introduction was with "Superman." Will there be another warm hero, or will it follow the unique color of DC?
James Gunn was firm, stating, "Not every movie needs to be like 'Superman.' Each work will have a different atmosphere," adding, "I don't want the audience to get bored."
Meanwhile, James Gunn was appointed co-head of the DC Universe in 2022. A total of 10 projects he is involved in will be released sequentially.
