The Shocking Case of a Convenience Store Owner in Jeju

A couple running a convenience store in Jeju has shared their experience of suffering financial losses due to a part-time worker with experience in the industry.

According to a report on JTBC's 'Incident Report' on the 9th, the informant, Mr. A, hired a woman in her twenties with various work experiences at convenience stores after taking over the store in December of last year.

The convenience store is known for its excellent sales performance in the Jeju area, having recorded its highest sales in April. However, despite the increase in sales, there have been alarming signs of a continuous decline in net profit. Mr. A, suspicious of this trend, reviewed the CCTV footage and discovered a shocking truth.

Despite the increase in sales, the net profit has been continuously declining.

The Smart Embezzlement Method of the Part-Time Worker

The CCTV footage showed the part-time worker taking various items without permission, including a 25,000 won liquid cigarette, snacks, drinks, and ice cream, as well as withdrawing cash from the cash register.

What was even more serious was her manipulation of the POS system.

The part-time worker scanned her mobile phone barcode and charged the mobile payment system, unlawfully obtaining about 7 million won.

Additionally, she took money from the cash register every time there was a large amount of cash stored, and the amount of embezzlement she personally acknowledged reached 18 million won.

This appears to be a premeditated crime exploiting her knowledge of the convenience store management know-how and POS system.

The Store Owner's Anger at the Perpetrator's Audacity

Initially, the part-time worker admitted to her crimes and apologized, but later completely changed her attitude.

She claimed, "I have consulted with a lawyer and organized my position to receive legal punishment. Please do not attempt to contact me or negotiate."

She even communicated to 'Incident Report' production staff, stating, "As a suspect in this case, I am currently in the investigation stage. I do not want it reported without my consent. If the broadcast proceeds, I will consider legal action."

In response, Mr. A expressed his anger, saying, "The convenience store is the one that suffered, yet the audacity of the part-timer is simply outrageous." This incident starkly illustrates the risks that small business owners face during the hiring process and the vulnerabilities of operating convenience stores, raising awareness to prevent similar damages in the future.
