Iranian Athletics National Team, Charged with Group Sexual Assault of Korean Women
The Daegu District Prosecutor's Office, Gimcheon Branch has detained and indicted four members of the Iranian athletics national team on charges of group sexual assault against a Korean woman.
On the 17th, the second criminal division of the Gimcheon Branch (led by Chief Prosecutor Jeong Mi-ran) announced that they had sent these individuals to court on charges of special rape.

According to the prosecutor's investigation, the Iranian national athletes committed group sexual assault against a woman in her 20s at a motel in Gumi on the morning of May 31 while participating in the Asian Athletics Championships. The motel was reportedly used as the training quarters for the Iranian team.
Uncovering the Truth During Re-examination of Involvement in the Assault
In the initial police investigation, it was reported that individuals A, B, and C were accused of jointly raping the victim, while individual D was said to have acted as a lookout. They were sent to the prosecution without detention.
However, during the investigation, prosecutors closely examined the site’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and conducted a thorough re-investigation of the victim and related persons, revealing that the actual perpetrators of the sexual assault were individuals A, B, and D, not A, B, and C.

As a result, prosecutors have also detained individual D. This incident represents a serious crime committed by foreign athletes who visited Korea for an international sports event, leading to significant social repercussions.
A prosecutor stated, "The Iranian national team, which entered Korea to participate in the Asian Athletics Championships, has committed a serious crime by collectively sexually assaulting a Korean woman. The prosecution will strive to maintain charges to ensure that a corresponding sentence is imposed."
