“I Should Have Sexual Intercourse Before I Die”… Soldier Who Attacked Women’s Restroom Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison

A 20-year-old man, who attempted to commit indiscriminate sexual assault during military leave, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

On the 21st, the Daejeon District Court's 11th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Park Woo-geun) announced that it had sentenced A to 20 years in prison for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes.

The court also ordered A to have his personal information disclosed and notified for 10 years, wear an electronic monitoring device for 20 years, and have employment restrictions related to the disabled and minors for 10 years.

A followed B, a woman in her 20s whom he had just met, into a women's restroom in a commercial building in Jung-gu, Daejeon, on January 8 at around 3:30 PM, threatened her with a weapon, and attempted to sexually assault her.

While on military leave at the time, A stabbed B multiple times in the head and neck with a weapon, causing serious injuries. The victim suffered severe injuries to her head and ear, requiring over 100 stitches in emergency surgery. Fortunately, it has been reported that B's life is not in danger.

B's coworker relayed through JTBC's 'Incident Host' that "A, claiming to be a soldier, threatened B by saying, 'I'm going to die today,' and 'I need to have sex with you before I die.'" Following the crime, A attempted to take his own life on the roof of a nearby apartment but was urgently arrested by the police.

A threatened B, saying he was a soldier, "I'm going to die today," and "I need to have sex with you before I die."

During the trial, A's defense admitted to the related charges but claimed it was an "impulsive crime." A's lawyer argued, "Please consider that the defendant attempted to take his own life the day before the crime, which led to the impulsive act," adding, "He did not touch or undress the victim after stabbing her, indicating a lack of intention to commit rape."

In his final statement, A also expressed, "I don't think I was in my right mind ahead of my return to the army," and added, "I cannot apologize enough to the victim. I will consistently seek treatment and will not commit any crime after my release," pleading for leniency, but the court rejected A's claims.

The court clarified in its ruling that "the defendant committed the crime while refusing to return to military service due to anxieties, and purchasing a weapon was with the intent to harm others. It is difficult to consider it an impulsive crime, and the intent to commit rape and murder is recognized given the continuous threats and assault on the victim."

Additionally, the court stated, "The defendant planned the crime to avoid returning to the military and attacked the victim while being aware of the possibility of her death, which is highly malicious," explaining the reasons for sentencing by noting that the victim continues to suffer from severe trauma and is requesting a harsh penalty.
