In light of this decision, Gyeongsangbuk-do has requested the name change from central government agencies, relevant institutions, and media outlets. Additionally, it has directed that all documents and press releases from the provincial government and its affiliated organizations be unified to refer to it as the 'Mugunghwa Train Accident.'

'Mugunghwa Train Accident'

An Inevitable Measure to Protect Local Image

A representative from Gyeongsangbuk-do explained the necessity of this name change, stating, "If the site of the accident is emphasized, there are concerns about negative spillover effects on the local economy and residents' lives." He added that it is "an unavoidable administrative measure for accurate communication of the accident and to protect the region's honor."

The accident occurred on the morning of the 19th on the Gyeongbu Line in Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

One employee from Korail and six structural safety inspection researchers from a subcontractor were traveling to conduct a safety inspection of a retaining wall structure in a flood-affected area when they were struck by a Mugunghwa train coming from behind.
