Hong Joon-pyo Presidential Candidate Announces Promises on Nuclear Balance and Military Benefit Points System
The People Power Party’s Hong Joon-pyo, a candidate in the presidential primary, announced key pledges in the fields of defense, unification, and diplomacy, focusing on pursuing nuclear balance between North and South Korea and introducing a military benefit points system.
On the 17th, Candidate Hong elaborated on his security vision at a 'Vision Presentation for a Prosperous Nation Era' event held at his Yeouido campaign office.

Candidate Hong declared a principle of responding to North Korean threats with "nuclear with nuclear," stating that he would respond to North Korea's nuclear threats through exploring the possibility of nuclear sharing with the United States and independent nuclear development.
In response to North Korea's nuclear power, he asserted, "We will actively consider NATO-style nuclear sharing or deploying tactical nuclear weapons by U.S. forces in South Korea," and emphasized, "If necessary, we will keep the possibility of independent nuclear development open, and actively prepare to secure nuclear capabilities through enhancing nuclear technology and human resources."
Emphasis on Improving Treatment of Military Personnel and Fostering Professional Soldiers
Candidate Hong also pledged to provide substantial benefits to military personnel through the introduction of a military benefit points system.
He stated, "Regardless of gender, all military personnel will receive benefits, and the points system will be adjusted reasonably," promising fundamental improvements in treatment rather than mere salary increments.

Candidate Hong argued, "Modern warfare is not about numbers, but about advanced weaponry," asserting that hiring professional soldiers who can perform the work of ten individuals and paying them higher salaries is the way to strengthen national defense.
This is interpreted as a shift from a traditional personnel-centered defense policy to one that aims to transition to a military equipped with advanced technology and professionalism.
Regarding relations with North Korea, he stated, "We will implement a realistic North Korea policy that aims for coexistence and peace by ceasing interference in the opposing regime."
