“Former Wife of Kim Dong-seong, Who Revealed ‘Couldn’t Receive Child Support,’ Sent to Prosecutors on Defamation Charges”

Kim Dong-sung's Ex-Wife Charged with Defamation After Revealing Unpaid Child Support

Kim Dong-sung's ex-wife, who publicly stated that she had not received child support from the former short track national representative, has been sent to the prosecution on defamation charges.

According to police and officials on the 12th, the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul has recently revealed that Kim Dong-sung's ex-wife, referred to as A, was sent to the prosecution in June for defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act.

In March 2020, following her divorce from Kim Dong-sung in 2018, A claimed that she had not received agreed child support payments and provided Kim Dong-sung's information to the internet site "Bad Fathers," which reveals the identities of those failing to pay child support.

Background of the Claims of Unpaid Child Support and Defamation Lawsuit

In an interview with the media, A expressed that she was facing financial difficulties due to not receiving child support from Kim Dong-sung.

At that time, A claimed, "Just before the child support payments were missed, Kim Dong-sung gifted a 2.3 million won coat to his current wife, Im Min-jung, who he remarried in 2021. While he hasn't given me child support, the two of them went golfing and traveling."

In response to A's claims, Kim Dong-sung and his wife filed a lawsuit against A in January of this year, charging her with defamation through the dissemination of false facts.

Kim Dong-sung's side argued, "The defendant's assertion that he intentionally failed to pay child support despite having sufficient funds is a false statement," claiming that "his social reputation has been severely damaged."

Following the investigation, the police concluded that it was difficult to determine that A intentionally mentioned falsehoods.

However, they determined that A's series of actions, including her registration with Bad Fathers and her interviews with the media regarding the unpaid child support, constituted private sanctions, and they referred the case to the prosecution on charges of defamation through the dissemination of true facts.
