First weekend after Lee Jae-myung’s inauguration, ‘counter’ rally held in Seoul… “Ending civil unrest vs. election fraud”

The first weekend after President Lee Jae-myung's inauguration saw contrasting rallies held across Seoul.

Today (7th), multiple gatherings related to former President Yoon Suk-yeol took place simultaneously in various parts of downtown Seoul.

Supporters of former President Yoon held a rally claiming election fraud, while the opposing side conducted a demonstration urging the arrest of Yoon.

According to police and officials on the 7th, a rally titled "Yoon Suk-yeol Again," organized by YouTubers supporting Yoon, was held at 2 PM in front of Exit 7 of the Seocho Station near the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.

As of 3 PM, police unofficially estimated that around 800 people attended the rally, where supporters waved Taegeukgi (the national flag of South Korea) and the American flag, raised allegations of election fraud, and demanded the resumption of President Lee Jae-myung's retrial.

Meanwhile, in front of Exit 9 of the Kyodae Station, near the court in Seocho-gu, a progressive group called "Candlelight Action" started a rally around 5 PM, calling for the arrest of former President Yoon and First Lady Kim Keon-hee.

They announced plans to march to Sinnonhyeon Station. The Candlelight Action group stated, "The establishment of a government that represents the people's sovereignty indicates that our struggle has entered a new phase."

A student organization called "Democracy and Reunification Student Council" also held a rally condemning former President Yoon at 2 PM in front of the War Memorial near the presidential office in Yongsan and marched to Yongsan Station.

Notably, the scale of the large rallies that had been held weekly in Gwanghwamun Square has significantly decreased.

The area around the Donghwa Duty-Free Shop in Jongno-gu, where the rally organized by the "National Movement for Correcting the Republic of Korea" led by Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon was taking place, did not experience road traffic control on this day. Additionally, the "National Convention for the Elimination of Pro-North Korean Forces," organized by the Liberty Unification Party, had initially reported a rally of 10,000 participants scheduled for 1 PM; however, actual turnout was reportedly only in the dozens.
