“Don’t Grill Meat” vs “It’s My House, So What?”… Controversy over Grilling Meat on the Balcony Ignited

The debate over grilling meat on balcony issues

A discussion has arisen among netizens regarding the issue of grilling meat on apartment balconies.

Recently, a post appeared on an online community stating, "Isn't grilling meat on the balcony not allowed?"

The author, referred to as A, expressed his shock, saying, "I saw a poll on social media about whether it's acceptable to grill meat on the balcony due to food odors, and 80% said 'yes.' I was astonished."

He continued, "I don't care if you're grilling meat or fish in the kitchen or cooking fermented soybean paste. I personally grill meat in the kitchen. It's natural for cooking at home to produce odors."

However, he added, "The balcony is different. When you step out onto the balcony, what do you see? Most homes have clothes or blankets hung out to dry."

He complained that "the odors all rise through the drainage system."

A claimed that the balcony in the apartment has a drainage system connecting the upper and lower units, allowing smoke and smells from grilling meat to directly infiltrate his space.

As a result, he described how the odor and smoke from the meat cling to his wet laundry on the balcony.

A expressed his frustration, saying, "Nowadays, the world has become harsh. Why should I be criticized for cooking at home? They tell me to use a dryer, but there are clothes that can't be put in one. Should I really have to take my clothes and blankets to a laundromat to ensure they're adequately washed because I'm worried about the neighbors grilling meat below?"

He asserted, "It's not that the world has become harsh. Isn't unseen damage still damage? Please, for the sake of common sense, cook in the kitchen. If you're not going to help cover the laundry costs for the upstairs neighbors, then grill meat in the kitchen."

Netizens had somewhat mixed reactions upon hearing the story.

Some agreed with A's opinion, stating, "The smell of cigarette smoke from the balcony and the smell of someone else's grilled meat are the same. Please grill where there's a ventilation system," and "Can you wear the same clothes to work the next day after eating at a barbecue restaurant? Barbecue restaurants have ventilation systems, yet your clothes still smell; how much worse is it on a balcony?"

On the other hand, some netizens countered, "If you dislike the smell of grilled meat, live in a house," "Should I feel guilty about grilling meat or fish in my own home?" and "The balcony and the kitchen are similar. In an apartment, you inevitably smell your neighbors' food."
