Democratic Party: “Kim Moon-soo received 170 million won in illegal political funds through YouTube Super Chat… Reporting to the police”

Democratic Party Files a Complaint Against Kim Moon-soo for Alleged Violation of Political Fund Law

The Democratic Party of Korea has filed a complaint with the police against Kim Moon-soo, the presidential candidate from the People Power Party, for alleged violations of the political fund law.

On the 13th, the Democratic Party announced that it had reported Kim to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency over suspicions regarding the earnings from super chats (cash donations) on his YouTube channel.

On this day, the Democratic Party's Public Election Law Support Group held a press conference at the party headquarters in Yeouido and claimed, "From 2018 to 2022, candidate Kim earned a total of 175,646,580 won through 5,976 instances of super chats on his YouTube channel 'Kim Moon-soo TV,' with an average amount of 29,392 won per instance."

According to the guidelines prepared by the National Election Commission regarding "social media revenue activities under the political funds law," receiving sponsorship funds on platforms like YouTube and podcasts, which are opened and operated for political activities, constitutes a violation of the political fund law.

Park Beom-gye, the head of the legal support group, stated, "Personal donations through super chats have a strong character of illegal political funding," and added, "The Election Commission has repeatedly confirmed the illegality of super chats related to political funds."

He further noted, "If candidate Kim was unaware of these facts, he is not qualified to be a politician. Conversely, if he continued to receive substantial amounts through super chats while knowing this, he has engaged in shameless illegal acts."

Additionally, Park emphasized, "Given that a fatal disqualification has been confirmed for a presidential candidate, Kim should immediately resign from his position as a candidate and return to his primary role as an extreme right-wing YouTuber."
