“Can’t you just say you were driving?”… The fate of the man who took the wheel instead of his unlicensed friend after an accident.

Man Who Took the Wheel for His Friend After an Unlicensed Driving Accident

A man who pretended to take the wheel for a friend who caused a traffic accident while driving without a license has been sentenced to 6 months in prison, with a 1-year probation.

The 40-year-old man, who called a friend to take the blame for driving after causing a traffic accident, was sentenced to prison and taken into custody by the court.

On the 12th, the Cheongju District Court's Criminal Division 2 Chief Judge Shin Yoon-joo announced that he sentenced Mr. A (41) to 1 year in prison for violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (causing injury), violating the Road Traffic Act (driving without a license), and aiding the escape of a criminal.

Mr. A is accused of injuring a motorcycle rider while driving a vehicle without a license on a road in the Buk-gu district of Gwangju at 7:07 AM on February 14 of last year.

Mr. B (37), who was also indicted, received a sentence of 6 months in prison with a 1-year probation. He is accused of making false statements to the responding police officers, asserting that he was the one driving.

At the time, Mr. A was found to have falsely reported the accident to his insurance company, claiming "B was driving and caused the accident."

However, Mr. A later confessed during the subsequent police investigation that he was the one driving.

Chief Judge Shin Yoon-joo explained the reason for the sentence by stating in the judgment that "Defendant A has a poor character and has not received forgiveness from any of the victims." In contrast, regarding defendant B, he noted, "He shows remorse and is a first-time offender," which led to the probation sentence.
