Elementary School Soccer Club Bus Accident, 6 Injured
On the morning of the 13th, at around 9:20 AM, a small bus carrying elementary school students was involved in an accident in the Masong Tunnel on the Yeongdong Expressway heading towards Gangneung in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
The bus collided with the tunnel wall and then overturned. As a result of the accident, 6 elementary school students on board sustained injuries.
Among the injured, 2 suffered serious injuries while 4 had minor injuries and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals. Fortunately, it has been reported that all the injured elementary students are not in life-threatening condition.
At the time of the accident, there were a total of 19 individuals on the bus, including 18 elementary school students from the soccer club and 1 driver in their 30s. It was confirmed that all passengers were wearing seatbelts.
Incident Circumstances and Scene Details
This bus was reportedly on its way to participate in a local soccer tournament when the accident occurred.
Upon reviewing the accident details, it was determined that the bus lost control approximately 400 meters after entering the tunnel, colliding with the left and right walls in succession before overturning.
It was confirmed that some sections of the tunnel's surface were wet due to rain that had fallen that day. However, a police official stated, "While some parts of the road were wet, there were no puddles, so it is difficult to conclude that the accident was caused by wet road conditions."
Immediately after the accident, police closed the tunnel where the accident occurred among the two tunnels heading towards Gangneung and commenced accident response operations.
A police representative reported, "Immediately after the accident, vehicles in the tunnel were reversed, and since the adjacent tunnel was functioning normally, there was no significant traffic congestion."
Currently, the police are investigating to determine the exact cause of the accident, carefully examining statements from the bus driver and witnesses.
