Broadcaster Lee Sang-yong passes away at 9… “Eternal Popeye Uncle”

Broadcaster Lee Sang-yong passed away on the 9th at the age of 81. He was beloved by the entire nation, known by the nickname 'Uncle Pop-eye.'

Lee Sang-yong collapsed on his way home after visiting a hospital near his residence in Seocho District, Seoul, on the morning of the 9th. He was transferred to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital for emergency treatment but unfortunately succumbed.

A representative from 'E-Made' stated in a phone call with 'Dispatch,' "He was on his way back from the hospital due to flu symptoms," and added, "He did not have any chronic illnesses. He had even given a lecture the day before," expressing sorrow.

His family is urgently returning to South Korea upon receiving the news. The representative mentioned, "His son is residing in Hong Kong," and stated, "He is scheduled to arrive today by flight and will establish the funeral hall."

The deceased's funeral hall is expected to be at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital funeral home. It is anticipated that the funeral procedures will take place after entering the hall at 1 PM on the 10th. The burial site has not yet been determined.

Meanwhile, Lee Sang-yong made his debut in 1973 on MBC-TV's 'Pleasant Blue and White War.' He became a star as an MC for entertainment programs targeting children and military personnel, such as 'Let's Gather and Sing' and 'Stage of Friendship.'

During his lifetime, he sponsored surgery costs for over 500 children suffering from heart disease. He received several awards, including the National Medal of Accomplishment (1987), Sports Medal of Merit (1990), and Minister of Culture and Tourism’s commendation (1998).
