Landlord's Text "Additional 3,000 Won for Guests" Sparks Outrage Among Tenants
A tenant, A, who is living in a one-room apartment in Seoul, recently expressed dissatisfaction by sharing a message received from the landlord.

According to a post on a popular online community on the 15th, the landlord stated, "With the summer vacation season, the number of guest visits is increasing," and informed that "an additional fee of 3,000 won per day is charged for each extra person visiting." The landlord also requested that "residents calculate the number of days their guests visit when paying the monthly rent." In response, A questioned, "Is this legally acceptable? Do I have to pay?"
Criticism Rains Down Online
Once the story was revealed, citizens flooded social media with responses stating that the landlord's demands were unreasonable.

Citizens criticized, saying, "The neighbors are the ones inconvenienced by the guests, so why is the landlord charging money?" and "If you’re going to argue like that, shouldn't the calculation be based on a 24-hour residence? I only sleep at home due to commuting; should I get half off my rent?" They added, "If I stay out overnight, will they charge me an additional fee for neglecting property management?"
Controversy Over Unjustified Additional Charges Without Contract Basis
Some pointed out, "Unless it's specified in the lease agreement, suddenly making this request holds no legal power."

Experts also explained that unless there are separate clauses in the rental contract, charging tenants additional costs for having guests over can be deemed unfair. This controversy has once again highlighted the frequent conflicts between landlords and tenants in one-room apartments and goshiwons during the summer season.
