On the 4th, the day the removal of former President Yoon Seok-yeol was confirmed, the Representative of the People Power Party, Kwon Seong-dong, stated, "The presidential election is just two months away," and emphasized, "We cannot entrust the future of the Republic of Korea to the Lee Jae-myung faction." During a meeting of lawmakers held that afternoon at the National Assembly, Kwon urged, "Now is the time for us to unite and lead the victory in the presidential election."
The comments made shortly after the Constitutional Court's decision on the removal of former President Yoon are interpreted as an attempt to rally the party and appeal for consolidation within the conservative camp. Representative Kwon stated, "The political clock does not stop. Although time is tight, we have an election ahead of us that we must not back down from or lose."
He further added, "Isn't it said that the strongest bird comes from the hottest fire? Let us think of today's pain and trials as tempering for a greater victory. Let us rearm ourselves with steadfast determination and embark on a new beginning. Tomorrow, the sun will surely rise."
He also expressed his position on the Constitutional Court's decision. Kwon remarked, "I am devastated beyond disappointment," and offered "deep apologies to the people." He noted, "The situation where a president elected directly by the people cannot complete their term and has to leave mid-way is a tragedy," adding, "As the ruling party that has shared responsibility for state governance, we take this situation gravely."
He declared that "our party will reflect deeply on this ruling and will transform into a responsible party."
However, he indirectly expressed regret regarding the Constitutional Court's decision. Kwon expressed, "There are many issues related to the procedures and content, so there is great disappointment. However, it is our responsible attitude to respect the Constitutional Court’s decision, even if it hurts. Only by doing so can our society move beyond conflict and division toward unity and a better future."
In conclusion, he emphasized, "This is the true nature of our party, which is fundamentally different from the Democratic Party," and stated, "We must take a different path from forces that thrive on division and political strife."
