Lee Jae-myung: "The Great People Will Restore the Great Republic of Korea"

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed his position immediately after the Constitutional Court's verdict on President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment.

On the 4th, shortly after the ruling, Lee held an emergency press conference in the party's representative meeting room and said, "I sincerely respect and thank the citizens who have protected the democratic republic of Korea."

He stated, "The impeachment of former President Yoon, who threatened the people and democracy with the power entrusted to him by the citizens and destroyed the Constitution, has been declared." He added, "The spirits of Jeju 4.3 and Gwangju 5.18, who fell to the guns of the martial law army, and the people who stood against the guns and tanks, along with the courage of the generals who refused unjust orders, have led to this great revolution of light."

He continued, "It is a tragedy in the constitutional history of the Republic of Korea that the current president has been impeached for the second time," and emphasized, "All politics, including myself, must deeply reflect and feel a sense of responsibility."

He added, "I will do my utmost to ensure that politics becomes a hope for the people and the nation, so that the tragedy of constitutional destruction does not repeat."

Furthermore, he noted, "The Republic of Korea is the only country in world history where an unarmed citizenry peacefully subdued unjust power. Following the Candlelight Revolution, our people dramatically revitalized democracy on this land with the revolution of light." He concluded, "The world will reassess our Republic of Korea and yearn for the strength of K-Democracy."

In closing, he remarked, "If we unite our strength, we can quickly restore the trust of the international community and turn a crisis into an opportunity. From now on, the real Republic of Korea begins. Together with the people, I will restore the collapsed livelihoods, peace, economy, and democracy with a spirit of great unity. I will certainly open the path to growth and development toward a world where all citizens live together with hope in a safe and peaceful country."
