Prominent figures in the Republic of Korea will support the Busan International Film Festival. They will engage in conversations with the audience about the films they have recommended.

The Busan International Film Festival office announced on the 22nd, "The 30th Busan International Film Festival will feature a special project program 'Carte Blanche' to commemorate its 30th edition."

'Carte Blanche' translates to 'blank check' in Korean, an expression used when someone is given unrestricted freedom of choice. It aims to provide a unique cinematic experience.

This section, introduced for the first time this year, will showcase recommended films chosen by notable figures from the film and culture sectors. It aims to share deep reflections with the audience and rediscover these works.

A total of five individuals will participate in this 'Carte Blanche' program. They include director Bong Joon-ho, director Maggie Kang, actor Gang Dong-won, novelist Eun Hee-kyung, and former JTBC president Sohn Seok-hee.

First, director Bong has selected Aoyama Shinji's 'Eureka' (2000). This film, which tells the story of people healing after experiencing tragedy, was invited to compete at the Cannes Film Festival at the time. He described it as “a masterpiece from Aoyama Shinji, who has now left us, that quietly approaches, gradually seeps in, and shakes you to your core with emotional resonance.”

Director Kang chose Bong's film 'The Host' (2006). He remarked, "Before watching 'The Host,' I didn’t know that a single film could encompass so many atmospheres." It had a significant influence on his work, and he added, "I learned that multiple atmospheres can coexist within one film and that maintaining balance is essential."

Gang Dong-won selected 'Jeon Woo-chi' (2009), in which he starred. This film is based on the classic novel 'Jeon Woo-chi Jeon' and has been beloved as a K-hero movie. He expressed his anticipation, stating, "Many people refer to it as the 'original K-hero film' and I would love to enjoy it on the big screen again after a long time."

In addition, Eun Hee-kyung selected 'If You Can Hear My Eyes' (2022) directed by Sho Miyake, and Sohn Seok-hee picked 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975) directed by Sidney Lumet.

Meanwhile, the 30th Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 17 to 26 next month at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae-gu.
