Heavy Rain in Gyeonggi's Gapyeong: Body of Missing Teen Found, Death Toll Increases to 6

On the 20th, a body discovered near Deokhyeon Bridge in the Sangmyeon Deokhyeon-ri area of Gapyeong County has been identified as that of a teenage boy, referred to as A, who was swept away by a rapid current after being buried in a landslide caused by heavy rainfall.

With this confirmation, the total number of fatalities related to the heavy rain in northern Gyeonggi now stands at 6, including 5 from Gapyeong and 1 from Pocheon.

The Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 25th that the body, buried in debris near a valley by Deokhyeon Bridge, was identified as that of A around 9:33 a.m. the previous day.

A, who was discovered four days after going missing, was reportedly found with only his arm protruding from the debris. The location where A was found is 15 km downstream from the camping site in Mailli, where his family had been staying.

Search Operations Ongoing… 2 More Missing Persons Remain

The fire authorities, concluding that fingerprint identification was impossible, requested a DNA comparison from the police, and on the 25th in the morning, they received confirmation that the body belonged to A.

As of now, there are still two individuals remaining missing alongside A: A's mother (41) and a man in his 50s who was swept away by rapid currents near the riverbank in Deokhyeon-ri.

The police and fire authorities have continued searching for the sixth day, deploying 324 police officers, 198 firefighters, 260 soldiers, and 58 volunteer firefighters for the search on the 25th. Additionally, 151 units including drones and helicopters have been mobilized to intensify the search for the remaining missing persons.

As the damage from the heavy rainfall persists, authorities are urging caution regarding safety around rivers and valleys.
