“Best friends who landed a job decided to give a commemorative gift worth 30,000 won… ‘One person gave a gift worth 15,000 won and a fight broke out.’”

Twenty-Something Friends Fighting Over Gift 'Prices'

Four close friends in their late twenties got into a major fight while trying to exchange gifts to celebrate their successful job placements.

Recently, a story titled "Friends Are Fighting Over Gift Prices" was posted on an online community.

According to the author, all four friends, including himself, succeeded in getting jobs. To celebrate, they decided to rent a party room during the long holiday period and spend two days and one night together.

They also prepared a special event. To celebrate their employment, they agreed to give each other gifts. They set the price to around 30,000 KRW so that it wouldn't be a burden for each other and promised to randomly exchange the gifts through a ladder drawing.

On the promised day, each prepared their gifts. However, an awkward atmosphere began to arise immediately after Friend A's gift was revealed.

They had clearly agreed to prepare gifts around the 30,000 KRW range, but A's gift comprised only of an 8,000 KRW hand cream and a 5,000 KRW keyring.

Eventually, after the party ended, the conflict erupted.

Friend A, who received a bag as a gift, left a message in their group chat saying, "I’ll use the bag well and enjoy the snacks. The bag is so pretty," adding that "I feel like I have no sense when it comes to choosing gifts, and what I picked seems too shabby compared to what you guys give."

Upon seeing Friend B's response of "LOL;;", A snapped back, "Why are you laughing?" B pointed out, "Honestly, hand cream and a keyring don't lack sense; they lack effort."

A replied, "I chose the hand cream scent carefully, and I picked the keyring in a design that should suit everyone's taste," but B shot back, "No matter how you look at it, what you gave is at most worth 15,000 KRW."

Ultimately, this conversation escalated into a fight between the two. A argued that it was a "light gift and since it was in the 30,000 KRW range, it didn't have to exceed that amount," while B countered that "It's a gift between friends, and it seems like a gift focused on cost-effectiveness."

The author of the post shared this conflict asking, "Do you think this is something to feel upset about?" seeking opinions from internet users.

In response, users commented, "Don't fight over 10,000 or 20,000 KRW," and "Is this really something to fight about?" suggesting that it wasn’t a particularly upsetting matter.

On the other hand, many criticized B's gift, saying things like, "If you lack sense, at least get a coffee gift card," "Even family members don't gift hand cream," and "You should think from the other person's perspective."
