National Team Archery Athletes' SNS Controversy, Association "Reviewing Disciplinary Actions"
The Korea Archery Association is responding to the controversy arising from the SNS activities of national team athletes.
On the 18th, the association announced its official stance, stating, "We are closely monitoring the situation and will review disciplinary actions through internal procedures." This incident began when some national team athletes posted on their SNS, sparking political controversy.
Recurve archery male national team athlete Jang Chae-hwan has repeatedly posted far-right content on his SNS, including claims of election fraud and derogatory comments about certain regions, causing social uproar.
In his late clarification, Jang explained, "I originally had a centrist-leftist inclination, but I took a conservative stance upon observing the current political situation," adding, "I wanted to raise awareness about the current situation for the future of free South Korea."
He also stated, "I did not think I was a public figure as I am not on the first team," while apologizing for causing social controversy.
Strengthening Responsibility and SNS Management of National Team Athletes
Jang Chae-hwan earned his national team position after passing the national team selection trials in March.
Although he did not place in the top four in the final evaluation and therefore did not secure spots for major international competitions, such as the 2025 Gwangju World Archery Championships, it is clear that he holds an official national team status.
The three-time champion of the Paris Olympics, Im Si-hyun, has also been engulfed in SNS controversy.
He faced criticism for posting the expression "Igiya," which is predominantly used in far-right online communities. In response, the association stated, "We do not identify any specific political intent," however, they emphasized that "given this has led to social controversy, we must discuss whether measures should be taken through the Sports Fairness Committee."
A representative from the Korea Archery Association emphasized, "As archery commands significant national interest, the athletes’ SNS comments can cause social repercussions," adding, "We will enhance education to strengthen their sense of responsibility and maintain dignity."
Following this incident, the association is reported to be reviewing the expansion of SNS education programs for all national team athletes and revising management guidelines.
